The government has set December 13 as the switch off date of the
analogue television broadcasting signal in Nairobi and its environs.
More than 900,000 owners of analogue television sets in Nairobi may not
be able to access their favourite channels if they don’t invest in
digital converters by December 31.
Initially, all analogue television sets were to be switched off by
end of this year, but the regulator decided to do it in phases starting
with Nairobi. The switchover in all the other areas will be done on June
30, 2014.
One of the biggest advantages is that digital broadcasting technology
will free extra spectrum, which will be used in other activities such
as voice and data communication, tele-medicine and tele-education.
